After my last very dramatic post, in this one I’m sharing something much more positive, and far less dramatic - though hopefully more impactful…
I’m writing another book!
The news is out now here on The Bookseller, pasted below.
I’m working with a truly amazing publisher and team at Canongate, and very excited about the journey ahead. I’ll start to share things I’ve learnt and some behind the scenes info about what it actually takes to write a book, and how I fit that in alongside my fairly busy job and family (if you know me and haven’t seen me for a while, this might explain it, oh and the whole major surgery thing too).
Canongate signs science journalist Melissa Hogenboom's Breadwinners
Canongate has snapped up science journalist Melissa Hogenboom’s Breadwinners, described as "an essential guide for all couples and professionals".
Senior commissioning editor Helena Gonda acquired world rights from Catherine Cho at Paper Literary. Canongate will publish the book in hardback, e-book and audiobook in August 2025, with a paperback to follow.
"Pursuing and holding on to power is a key part of every single human interaction, and it affects every area of our lives," the synopsis says. "In Breadwinners, Melissa Hogenboom explores the various power dynamics impacting our relationships and gives readers the tools to learn to recognise and then shift these imbalances and expose how norms can be changed. Grounded in evidence-based research and offering insights into inequality, relationship satisfaction and the interplay of how power affects home and work life, Melissa invites us to rethink traditional roles and push for a fairer, more equal society."
Hogenboom said: "I’m delighted to be working with Helena and the wonderful team at Canongate, whose support and vision for the idea will give it the reach it deserves. I truly believe that a greater awareness around this topic will encourage lasting change that everyone can learn from and apply to their lives."
Gonda added: "What happens when one partner earns notably more than the other? And, crucially, how do you navigate that? It’s great to be working with Melissa as she takes us through the fascinating science behind power dynamics at play in our relationships. This is a book that helps readers address issues around inequality and relationship satisfaction, status, money and work with renewed insight, and I’m so pleased to be publishing at Canongate."
I’m in the midst of writing it but very interested to hear from all of you, are there must cover topics or issues you’d like to see?
And as for those who have been asking about my health, I am loads better and feel more myself with every passing day. I’m having to *stop* myself being too active and reminding myself that it’s only been four weeks. My incision scar is healing nicely and I’ve been enjoying a high cake high protein diet to attempt regain some of the muscle I lost. I am rather in awe of how well the body heals.
My book The Motherhood Complex is out now.
It’s available on Hive, Waterstones, Foyles or Amazon and all other stores. It’s also on e-book and audiobook. Read it? I would love to know what you think, or even better, leave me an Amazon review (you can do this regardless of where it was bought) - this really helps first time authors like me.
